Social Media Network Popularity

3rd March 2013

Many analysts have had differing opinions over the years regarding the Website Design and predicted on-going popularity of social media networks; Geocities and Facebook are a perfect example of this.

Geocities.

One of the very first social media networks ever to be created was Geocities – the Website Design was created to allow users to create their own Website Design based on one of six cities that were famous for certain characteristics. It was founded in 1994 and by 1999 was the third most visited Website on the World Wide Web. The service was shut down in 2009 and now, in 2013 it is a service that is only available in Japan.

Facebook.

Facebook was founded in 2004 and was initially only available to Harvard college students but was later made available to other Boston educational institutions before being opened to High School students and subsequently anyone over the age of 13.

As with Geocities analysts opinions on the future of Facebook varied at the start of its nationally spreading popularity thinking that it was “just a fad” and would either be replaced by something else or that people would get bored with the whole medium and move to other things of interest. Now, in 2013 Facebook has over 1,000,000,000 users worldwide and is the most popular social networking site ever conceived.

As ever analysts opinions are split on the exact reasons why this particular medium has become so popular. Some suggest that the constantly adapting Website Design and the ever increasing amount of games and apps that are available is the main attraction while others suggest that these are the very reasons why this medium will eventually fail due to the unpopularity (for some) of ever increasing advertising.

Whatever the reasons for the huge popularity of social networking are and the analysts opinions on individual site popularity one thing is clear, whatever the Website Design or address, social media will be around for a very long time and will, quite possibly, only evolve and never disappear.
