What the Highest-Scoring Schools Do Differently in AI Search

Ask ChatGPT to recommend a prep school in Hertfordshire, or Gemini to compare two sixth forms, and what comes back will name two or three schools rather than offering a list of ten. Enough parents are now doing this, often enough, that it is worth understanding how those answers get made.

So this August we scored 1,483 UK schools and 648 international schools for AI visibility, and published the results as the aiVisibility League. The picture it shows is an unusually open one.

Reaching the top is closer than it looks

On our scoring bands, 45 out of 100 counts as good and 65 as excellent. Thirty UK schools currently sit at good or better, and three of those reach excellent, with the two schools at the top of the table scoring 72.

Thirty schools out of nearly 1,500 means that a school reaching 45 lands straight into the top two per cent nationally. Competitive positions are rarely this available, which is why moving this term is worth considerably more than moving next year.

Clarity counts for more than budget or reputation

The strongest performers came from right across the sector, and several of them were small, specialist schools rather than the largest or best resourced. One school climbed 142 places this round to reach 70, another rose by more than 1,500 places and a third by nearly 1,400, which shows how quickly a school can move once it starts.

What the assistants reward is clarity, which is excellent news if you are a prep school with one marketing manager, because what moves you up the table is clearer writing on your own pages rather than a bigger budget.

The work is a short list

Scores cluster hard. Some 457 UK schools share exactly the same score of 14, and hundreds more sit within a point or two of each other, so the table has visible steps in it rather than a smooth curve. That pattern tells you the results are driven by a small number of factors that a school either has in place or has yet to add, which is what makes the work so tractable.

Four characteristics kept appearing among the schools scoring well.

They answer the question on the page, with a fees page that states the fees rather than asking you to contact the bursary, because an assistant can only cite a page that commits to something.

They are specific about who they are for, since “an outstanding all-round education” is invisible when every school says it, whereas a plain statement of who you teach and what you genuinely specialise in is citable.

Their information agrees with itself across the site, the prospectus and third-party listings, which is one of the cheapest wins available and compounds across every answer an assistant gives about you.

They are structurally readable, with a clear heading hierarchy and real text rather than words baked into images, which serves accessibility and conventional search just as well.

Three things to do this term

Ask the assistants about your own school. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, ask what they know about you, then ask them to compare you to the two schools you most often lose families to. It takes ten minutes, costs nothing, and whatever comes back is your starting position.

Fix the three pages that matter most, usually fees, admissions and whatever you genuinely specialise in, by giving each one real numbers, real dates and real specifics.

Write one genuinely distinctive sentence, not a strapline but a factual statement of what your school is and who it is for that no neighbouring school could also claim, then use it in plain text, high on the page, everywhere it belongs.

The window is open

The league is rescored every three months, and this August’s movements show how far a school can travel in a single round. For any school willing to act now, that combination of a short list of fixes and a largely unclaimed top tier is a rare one.
