How Often Should Schools Be Publishing New Content?
Why consistency matters more than volume
One of the most common questions we hear from school marketing teams is how often they should be publishing new blog posts or news updates. The honest answer is that consistency matters far more than volume. A school publishing one well considered post every two weeks will generally outperform a school that publishes five posts in one week and then goes quiet for two months.
Search engines reward sites that show a steady, ongoing pattern of fresh, relevant content. A burst followed by silence looks less like an active school and more like a one off marketing push, and search engines tend to treat it that way.
What is a realistic publishing rhythm
For most independent schools, one new piece of content every one to two weeks strikes the right balance. This is enough to keep the site feeling current without placing an unrealistic burden on staff who are already juggling admissions, events and day to day communications. It also gives each post room to be promoted properly on social channels and in newsletters before the next one arrives.
We also recommend spacing content around similar keywords by roughly six to eight weeks. Publishing two posts on very similar topics too close together can mean they compete against each other in search results rather than reinforcing one another.
Does every post need to be a full length blog
No. A healthy content mix includes shorter news style updates alongside longer, more considered pieces. A quick update about a sports fixture result or a staff appointment keeps the site feeling alive between the longer pieces that do the heavier lifting for search visibility, such as guides for prospective parents or deep dives into a particular curriculum strength.
What we suggest as a starting point
If your school does not currently have a content calendar, start simple. Plan one longer post and one shorter update each fortnight, built around the moments already happening in the school year, such as open days, results days and major events. Review performance every quarter and adjust the mix based on what is actually driving enquiries, rather than sticking rigidly to a plan that is not working.
Content planning is one of the areas we cover as part of our SEO for schools service, and you can see examples of how this has worked for other schools across our portfolio.
If you would like help building a content calendar tailored to your school’s admissions cycle, we would be glad to put one together with you. Speak to your InnerMedia contact whenever suits.
