How Are AI Overviews Changing the Way Parents Search for Schools?

Why parents are searching differently

A growing number of parents no longer start their school search with a list of blue links. Instead, they type a question into Google and read the AI generated summary that appears above everything else. For independent schools, this shifts the goalposts. Ranking well in the traditional sense still matters, but being the source an AI overview chooses to quote or reference now matters just as much.

We are seeing this shift across our own client data. Search queries such as “best schools for boarding in Surrey” or “schools with strong sixth form results near me” are increasingly answered with a summarised response before a single website is clicked. If a school’s content is not clear, well structured and easy for an AI system to lift from, it simply will not appear in that summary.

What makes content AI friendly

AI overview systems favour content that answers a specific question directly, in plain language, close to the top of the page. Long, meandering introductions that build up to the point are a problem here, not because they read badly, but because the system has nothing concise to extract. We now write admissions and curriculum pages with the answer stated plainly in the first sentence or two of each section, then expanded afterwards for the human reader who wants more detail.

Structured data plays its part too. Schema markup that clearly labels a page as a school, an event, or a set of frequently asked questions gives AI systems a trusted signal about what the content actually is. Schools that have implemented FAQ schema across their admissions and curriculum pages are, in our experience, more likely to have that content surfaced when a parent asks a direct question.

Does this mean traditional SEO no longer matters

Not at all. Authority, relevance and technical health remain the foundation everything else is built on. AI overview systems still draw heavily from pages that already rank well and are already trusted by search engines. The schools doing best in this new environment are the ones that treated their existing SEO seriously and are now layering AI readiness on top of it, rather than starting from scratch.

What has changed is the emphasis on clarity. A page written for a search engine crawler and a page written for an AI summarisation model are not different tasks. Both reward content that is well organised, genuinely answers the question in the heading above it, and avoids padding for the sake of word count.

What we recommend schools do next

Start with the questions parents are actually asking. Review your admissions FAQs, your open day pages and your curriculum overviews, and check whether each one answers its own heading in the very next sentence. Add or refresh FAQ schema where it is missing. And keep an eye on how your school appears, or does not appear, in AI overviews for your key search terms over the coming months, because this is an area that will keep moving quickly.

This kind of AI readiness work sits alongside everything else covered in our SEO for schools service, from technical health through to content structure, so it rarely needs to be treated as a separate project.
