Whether you are putting together a new social media strategy for your business or updating an existing one, it is important to research current trends and successful industry content.

Here are three social media trends you should know about in order to create a successful 2020 strategy…

Dark Social
Social media trends are changing. Brands have gone from trying to connect with thousands of people, to a more intimate and conversational style of marketing, targeted at smaller groups or individual customers. This style of marketing is becoming more popular through the use of ‘dark social channels’ such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram DMs. Dark social simply means places where social media monitoring tools cannot track brand mentions.

Facebook are planning to merge the back end of all of their messaging platforms. This is a crucial development that brands should monitor closely, because this new ‘master’ messaging app will soon dominate the industry.

Episode Content
Episode content, also known as ‘Binge-worthy content’; is a must for social media success. This is content you need to create at least twice a month, in order to build up a series of episodes. We have seen a recent rise in this type of content due to the Coronavirus self-isolation enforcement. Everyone from celebrities like Joe Wicks, to tutors and freelance artists are creating episode content to keep their followers engaged.

This type of content should take priority in your social media strategy and you will need to ensure that you can spare the production time in order to stay consistent. If you are unsure what to share in your episode content, simply share your industry knowledge in small bite-sized chunks.

Blog style captions
When creating content for any social media platform, it is important to remember that each platform wants its users to stay there. They want to see how long a user pauses to look at your content. This means that any posts including a link to your website will see limited reach.

What you need to create is content that will keep the users interest. For example, on Instagram you will find that long captions work well at holding the attention of your audience. It is crucial to get those few words right before the “more…” link that opens up the rest of the caption.
